GRAPHICS: ALPHABET COLLAGE

Different typefaces can alter the meaning of the words used. The aim is to alter the font type to portray the message that we want to get across.

In this exercise, the letter A was changed and manipulated to portray different types of emotions.
I matched the type of emotion to an object or surrounding in the photography to further portray the message I wanted to get across.

For this letter A the emotion is SHY. I cut out around the a to create a see through outer line to imitate felling of invisibility since shy people tend to not involve themselves with social participation and could perhaps feel a sense of invisibility.
In American teen films there is a stereotype depiction that shy or lonely teens go to the bathroom and eat their lunch in the cubicles since they have no one to sit with. That is why this SHY A is pictured with the bathroom sign.

For the LOVE emotion, it is pictured with a female mannequin. The A was cut out of baby pink paper with a delicate and flowing font. Baby pink is soft and the font is very italic which can depict the typical head over heels fleeting romance. Also in the centre of the A is a silhouette of two faces about to kiss.  I identify love with how it is portrayed in films with the heroine becoming lovestruck and writing in her journal soppy things about her crush. Again a stereotype based off teen movies but sometimes stereotypes seen in films are an effective way of getting across messages since many people can associate and understand it. I used the female figure of this mannequin to show this LOVE emotion.

For the emotion CHAOS, I drew an illustrative A depicting a crumbling man made structure with tree roots puncturing through the cement and the metal foundations showing bare. This was influenced from apocalyptic films and video games since I have always found the surroundings quite beautiful in the sense that nature has overgrown man made landscapes. But the main idea that apocalypse equals chaos since everyone becomes rampant and fears for their lives.  It is pictured near a bin since in another sense I think of landfill sites and how this is causing damage to out environment, landfill is chaos and could become too much for the earth to deal.
For the emotion ANGER I used fire by drawing an illustrative A out of fire and then adding red tissue paper to add texture. I put it next to a fire extinguisher to represent putting out anger like putting out a fire.

For the emotion FEAR I cut cracks in the A to show feeling of you are about to snap or break under fear or pain. I placed it against the lockers since fear can make you want to hide away so the lockers imitate feeling of wanting to hide inside away for what is scaring you.

I chose to place all of the A's in this arrangement on the couch in the common room. Common rooms in Universities are busy places full of diverse people and my idea was that all these A's stand for different emotions or traits even that are found in different types of people. The A's lined up like diverse people sitting on a couch demonstrate people with different personality traits and predominant emotions they feel.

This exercise helped to learn that different presentation fonts and its presentation can depict the emotion or feel for the image. For example if I had placed the FEAR cracked A in front of some flowers it could have contrasting connotations since the cracks look broken and depressive whereas flowers are bright and cheerful.

To create this alphabet collage, it was important that primary sources were used. Posters, signs, logos, book pages and structures are here accumulated to show a diverse collaged alphabet with a mixture of colour, forms and textures.

GRAPHIC DESIGN was then spelt out from our collected alphabet letters. I like how this result created letters with different colours, fonts and textures.
